AP Exams Go Digital in May 2027: What’s Changing and the Nov 13 Deadline
Last updated:
In May 2027, AP Exams are given in College Board’s Bluebook app. Most exams, including English, history, psychology, statistics and world languages, are fully digital. Math and science exams such as Calculus, Biology, Chemistry and Physics are hybrid: multiple choice is on screen and free-response answers are handwritten in paper booklets. Schools must order exams by November 13, 2026, or pay a $40 late fee per exam.
Key 2026–27 AP dates
Many schools set their own earlier sign-up deadline so the AP coordinator can place the order on time. Check with your school this week rather than waiting for November 13.
| Date | What happens |
|---|---|
| November 13, 2026 | Final deadline for schools to order exams for full-year and fall courses |
| January 22, 2027 | Deadline to request testing accommodations |
| March 12, 2027 | Deadline for spring course orders and changes to fall orders |
| May 3–7 and May 10–14, 2027 | AP Exams |
| May 17–21, 2027 | Late testing |
What the November 13 deadline means for fees
Students pay through their school, and some schools add a small amount for administration. Some states offer extra funding, so ask your AP coordinator.
| Fee | Amount (US) |
|---|---|
| Standard exam fee | $99 per exam |
| Late order fee (ordered November 14 to March 12) | $40 per exam, on top of the exam fee |
| Unused or canceled exam after November 13 | $40 per exam |
| College Board fee reduction for students with financial need | $37 off per exam |

- Macroeconomics; Microeconomics
- Music Theory (new to hybrid in 2027)
Portfolio-only courses
AP Art and Design is submitted entirely through the AP Digital Portfolio. AP Research has no written exam; students submit an academic paper and complete a presentation and oral defense.
How to prepare for a digital AP Exam
- Install Bluebook on the device you will use and try the free AP test preview for each of your subjects.
- Practise typing timed essays if your exam is fully digital. Typing under time pressure is a different skill from handwriting.
- For hybrid exams, practise reading the question on screen and writing the answer on paper, so switching between the two feels normal.
- World language students will listen and record in Bluebook, so ask your coordinator what equipment, such as a headset with a microphone, you need.
- Use updated practice: College Board says AP Classroom practice tests are being updated to match Bluebook.
