Is the Digital SAT Adaptive? How Module 2 Works and Affects Your Score
Last updated:
Yes. The Digital SAT is adaptive by section. Each section has two modules, and how well you do on the first module decides whether your second module is easier or harder. Doing well on module 1 unlocks the harder module 2, which is needed for the highest scores, because harder questions contribute more to your score.
How the test is built
Module 1 of each section contains a mix of easy, medium and hard questions. Your results on it decide which version of module 2 you get: one with more difficult questions, or one with fewer.
| Section | Module 1 | Module 2 | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reading and Writing | 27 questions, 32 minutes | 27 questions, 32 minutes | 54 questions, 64 minutes |
| Math | 22 questions, 35 minutes | 22 questions, 35 minutes | 44 questions, 70 minutes |
How adaptive scoring affects your score
- Scoring considers the difficulty of the questions you answer correctly, not just how many you get right.
- Students who reach the harder module 2 can earn the highest scores. Students routed to the easier module 2 can still score well, but the top of the scale is harder to reach.
- Each module includes a small number of unscored pretest questions, which look like the others. Treat every question as if it counts.
- There is no penalty for wrong answers, so never leave a question blank.
How to prepare for an adaptive test
- Make module 1 count: work carefully and check your answers, because it decides your path.
- Practice in Bluebook, College Board’s testing app, so the format, timer and built-in Desmos calculator feel familiar.
- Use your time well: you can move back and forth within a module, so flag hard questions and return to them.
- Train on hard questions too, so you are ready if you reach the harder module 2.
